GalleriesDonut U Like ME

This series examines the paradox in American culture of being preoccupied with health yet feeling justified in satisfying indulgent food cravings. I use the donut as a larger than life symbol that surrounds the viewer in the same vibrant and poppy colors applied in marketing. The donut’s popularity arises from the ease of giving in to the indulgence of a small, low cost luxury with high value in terms of experience.

Through both straight photography and composite images these larger than life photographs highlight the seduction of sugar cravings in an explosion of color, repetition and large scale room installation. I employ the iconography and symbols of common everyday objects as a means of communicating shared cultural experiences, like the seduction of junk food and our addiction to sugary sweets in popular culture. Photographing donuts against brightly colored backdrops and the use of extreme repetition highlights the absurd nature of this compulsion towards decadence.
